Planning a local or long-distance move? Moving to a new city can be exciting, but packing can be a hassle. It can even feel overwhelming, but there are steps you can take to make preparing for your move more efficient.
We should know!
Weleski Transfer is a moving company that has been helping people with their relocations since 1909, and our experienced movers are happy to share some of our top tips for efficient packing and unpacking.
Packing
Ready to start packing? Keep these tips in mind!
Start Early
Even if your move is several months away, you can start packing things you know you won’t use before your move. For example, you can start by packing seasonal clothing, holiday decorations, and other rarely used items. If possible, designate a place in your home, such as a spare bedroom, as a staging area where you can stack boxes as you pack them while still keeping them out of the way.
Get Rid of Stuff!
A move is a perfect excuse to downsize. Why pay to move things you no longer use or need? Before you start packing, go through items and separate them into 3 piles: keep, donate, or toss. You’ll have less to move and getting organized in your new home will be easier since you won’t be bogged down with unnecessary items.
Gather What You Need
Having the supplies you need on hand will make packing a much smoother process. Before starting, gather boxes, padding material, packing tape, a marker for labeling, and specialty boxes, such as wardrobe boxes or those designed for glassware.
Label Boxes Correctly
When labeling your boxes, label them for where they will go in your new home rather than where the items were in your old house. This will make it much easier to get organized in your new home.
Keep Electronics Accessories Together
Keep cords and other accessories together with the items they belong to. Place the accessories in a small bag and label it. Then tape it to the device. Another good idea is to take pictures of electronic setups to make it easier to set them up after the move.
Unpacking
Once your shipment arrives, the unpacking begins!
Open One Box at a Time
It can be tempting to just start ripping boxes open. Instead, open one box at a time and put everything away before moving on to the next. This will help you stay organized and minimize the mess while unpacking.
Only Touch Items Once
Use the “only touch items once” rule. That means when you take it out of the box, you put it in it’s proper place rather than setting it aside to be put away later. You’ll save on time by only touching items once, and it will help keep the process moving forward smoothly.
